Amar Singh, the former Samajwadi Party leader and Member of Parliament(MP) raised a starred question on gambling and gaming. Now Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor has raked up the issue. He is all set to introduce a private member’s bill in the Parliament to regulate betting in sports in the country. It would also deal with formally penalizing those involved in match fixing. It is scheduled to be introduced in the lower house of parliament on 28th December.
Jay Sayta, the founder of Glaws.in said in a website on gambling laws that the bill titled as Sports (Online Gaming and Prevention of Fraud) Bill, 2018 is aimed to introduce an effective regime. In order to maintain the integrity of sports in India by preventing and penalizing sports fraud and for regulation of online sports gaming, as per Lok Sabha’s agenda.
Further, he added that the bill should be on the priority list as whatever money is spent on betting can be taxed once legalized. This can also be an open up technology driven opportunities for the online platforms who facilitate betting. Dr. Shashi Tharoor tweeted that the Bill introduced by him is ‘an attempt to expand our freedoms’. It can become a law only if the government agrees to facilitate its enactment in Parliament.
