With the New Year ushering in with a bang, 2017 has clearly left its mark on our Indian poker community with some landmark events and history making happenings. 2017 was clearly an eventful year for the entire Indian poker industry and today we are going to take a quick look at some of the biggest record making poker news India from last year.
We have been waiting for long for our Indian players to win the World Series of Poker bracelet and in 2017 we got 2 WSOP bracelet winners, Aditya Sushant & Nipun Java. They are the first Indians to win the much coveted bracelet.
In 2017, our pros have shined like the true stars they are. Apart from the WSOP, many other Indian poker players have played exceptionally across various tournaments worldwide. Whether it was Raghav Bansal who won INR 92.20 Lakhs at the HK$50,000 NLH event at Macau Poker Cup or Nikita Luther ranking 5th at the WPT500 Aria Las Vegas bagging $65,000 or Varun Gupta winning the title at the APT Finale Macau Championships 2017 Main Event and grabbing the top cash prize of 24.81 Lakhs, the world saw the power of our Indian players!
Last year, one of our top female poker pros Muskan Sethi was awarded as ‘India’s First Woman to Play Professional Poker’ by the Indian President Ram Nath Kovind. She was recognized as one of the 100 Indian women who has made remarkable achievements in their respective fields.
Online MTTs on Indian poker sites went big in 2017 with huge tournaments, massive prize pools and record-breaking turnouts resulting in a stable source of income for many aspiring poker pros. From PokerBaazi’s The MoneyMaker ₹1 crore GTD event to Adda52’s Sunday Suits, Mega Suits and Adda52 Millions, online tourneys motivated millions of Indian to take up the mind sport professionally and as an actual source of living.

The inaugural season of the first-ever Poker Sports League made breaking news in 2017. The venture was powered by Amit Burman, Dabur vice-chairman and Anuj Gupta, Adda52 co-founder. The first season became hugely popular with 4.5 million views on the Facebook live stream. The league made further breaking news when Chess Grandmaster (GM) Viswanathan Anand, a Padma Vibhushan awardee was appointed as PSL brand ambassador.
Another first-of-a-kind poker league launched in India in 2017 was the first-ever Match Indian Poker League (MIPL). Backed by Raj and Shilpa Shetty Kundra and the International Federation of Match Poker (IFMP), the league became the first-ever televised Indian poker event.
One of the biggest international poker leagues also announced their debut season in India with the Global Poker League India in 2017. The inaugural season will be organized this year and is expected to take Indian poker to a whole new level in 2018. With A-list celebrities like Hrithik Roshan, Ranbir Kapoor, & Sushant Singh Rajput associated with the brand, this surely looks very promising.
