In spite of women leaving their mark in every field imaginable, there are still many careers that are typically dominated by men. This is why women who have broken stereotypes and became successful in unorthodox career paths were recently recognized by Honorable President Ram Nath Kovind at the “First Ladies” awards. The event was held on 20th January 2018 at the Rashtrapati Bhawan where 112 remarkable women were awarded by the President. Making the Indian poker community proud, poker pro Muskan Sethi was honored at the event as the first Indian woman to play poker professionally. This is surely the most inspiring poker news India for all aspiring female poker players.
The First-Ever First Ladies Awards
Her nomination was announced last year and last Saturday Sethi felicitated along with 112 other Indian women who were the first to lead their respective career fields. Selected by the Ministry of Women and Child Development and by Maneka Sanjay Gandhi, Indian Union Cabinet, the inaugural event was attended by awardees from across India from various fields.
Apart from our very own Muskan sethi, the list included many other impressive names like Actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, kabaddi coach Sunil Dabas, Paralympic silver medalist Deepa Malik, gymnast Dipa Karmakar, first woman Sarpanch Chhavi Rajawat, canine behaviourist Shirin Merchant, master Zumba trainer Sucheta Pal, F1 Racing Champion Alisha Abdullah, Grammy Award winner Tanvi Shah, Flying officer Avani chaturvedi, Padmashri & Arjuna Awardee international chess Grandmaster Bhagyashree Thipsay, WWE professional wrestler Kavita Devi, Bachendri Pal, first Indian woman to summit Mount Everest and many others.
A Feeling of Pride & Honour
In an interview with PokerGuru, Sethi said “It’s a feeling of pride and honour. I am completely overwhelmed by the whole experience. It means a lot to me to be a part of “First Ladies” & be counted amongst these strong, beautiful and accomplished women. Our honourable President Ram Nath Kovind, Minister for Women and Child Development, Maneka Gandhi and Union Cabinet Minister of Food Processing, Harsimrat Kaur Badal showered us with encouraging golden words. It was a very special day for me and my family.”
She added “We were presented with our awards and a coffee table book which features all the “First Ladies”, most of the names in this book are women that I idolize. It was such a proud moment for me as a poker player to represent my sport and get counted amongst these established women. We were informed how we were all handpicked by the government and how important it is for us to keep inspiring others from now on. It was a really big day for all of us and I feel blessed and responsible.”
We congratulate Muskan Sethi on this truly remarkable achievement.
